KIDS LIVES

AFTER

DIVORCE

Child Custody

The custody of your children is very important. The legal guardianship of your children determines many different things throughout their lives. Maintaining your role as their legal guardian after a divorce is very important. It is also very important that you do not get too caught up in 'winning' in a divorce that you do not put the child's interests first. Just because you have chosen to divorce their other parent does not mean that the child has chosen to divorce their parent. Keep in mind, they love both of their parents and most often they need both parents to guide them throughout the years and help prepare them for their futures. It is highly suggested that you work through any child custody concerns with your ex-spouse in a mediation stage rather than taking the case to court. When child custody cases go to court there is often a very poor response that results in many false accusations that can be very harmful for all involved. It is highly recommended that you remember to put the child first and work with your spouse and family law attorney to negotiate a plan that works well for both of you.

What will the kids think?

There is nothing your children hate more than hearing their parents fight. While adults don't always notice, children watch their parents very closely. In fact, they are always watching their parents and are very good at picking up on odd situations and vibes. Your children likely know when things are bad at home before you even realize that they do. Your kids absolutely hate watching the two people they love the very most fight with each other. Often times the period of time leading up to divorce does not make for a happy home. There is usually a great amount of fighting that children do not appreciate and wish would stop. While divorce is always hard on children, so it watching their parents argue and not love each other. If home has not been a happy place, most children welcome divorce because it means they don't have to watch their parents lives fall apart. It is much easier to have two happy separate parents for most kids than it is to have two parents living together that can't get along.
